NCTU HBS Case Study Course Takeaway

HBS(Harvard Business School):

  • Passion: no matter junior or senior
  • Quite Confidence: professional, we are doing great thing with influence the world
  • Discipline: time control, MBA students 900/Yr, 10 class, uniform methodology, so-called case method, and quality in teaching as a results from strict process.

N2. Case Method:

  • Problem oriented(Socrates, Plato, Aristotle), Question driven
  • Role play, participation, Real life problem(story, scenario)
  • Problem identification, definition, analysis, decision making(process of thinking).

N3. Take Away

  • Four dimension by matrix of: Obvious/non-obvious, not important, important
  • Extract the portion of not obvious and important
  • Generalized view, insight

N4. Negotiation

  • Market Value, Bottom line, Back up alternate(BATNA: Best alternate to a negotiation agreement vs bottom line)
  • Getting to YES and getting to past NO
  • Don't react; Go to the balcony
  • Don't argue; Step to their sides
  • Don't reject; Reframe
  • Don't push; Build them golden bridge
  • Don't escalate; Use power to educate
N5. BOS(Blue Ocean Strategy)

  • Standford vs Harvard business school; NCTU vs NTU
  • Differentiate and cost down as a attraction to customers and barrier to competitor
  • New segment, new market, new requirement, value selling
  • Value Curve: view from customers side in terms of product benefit/value, compare to existing vendors
  • 4 Actions plan:
    Elimination: Remove some thing which targeted customers don't really want/care
    Reduction: Some features can be reduced to a lower level that customers can accept.
    Creation: Provide new attractive factor
    Enhancement: Enhance some feature to a higher level
T1: 所謂Harvard教師之特質,簡言之,敬業,專業的自信。台灣從二戰後到目前,已過60年,開始大量引入USA技術與人才;遑論往前50年之日本殖民時期,也是所謂的"小明治維新"。難道,在教育界、工業界,都沒有查覺自身的停滯與懶散。弔詭! 至少我在業界看到我們的整體素質,並沒有與時並進的提升。難道過去的成功(OEM/ODM),反而限制了自己。
  看到BRIC的崛起,有人趁勢轉向西進,在異域闖一片天,像遊牧民族,台灣只是故鄉,並不是基地。產業像無根的蘭花飄去,人、錢也是。這難道是海島型經濟之宿命,沒有夠大的內需市場,無法建造堅實而寬廣的基礎,雖然世界很大,我們只看到USA。是的,IT製造產業一枝獨秀,可是我們的生活因此改善了?至少在IT應用端,很慢。少了基礎建設,前進動力不免遲滯,也無法長出新科技,新應用。
  教育界,工業界除了不停追趕新潮流,流行一窩蜂之外,是否眼光看到未來我們需要何種人才。我們總是急著趕工,作出今天站在門口的客戶想要的人才,產品。看起來有優勢,快速移動,轉向。可就是速成,沒有根,沒有遠見。即便是工程師,心理想的也是出貨。下一攤,明天,下一季,明年,再說吧。永遠努力工作Hard Wroking, 沒有時間去想 Smart/Professional Working. 工程師寶刀尚未磨利,不是轉換領域,或轉管理職。這一行終將變成苦力行業,不要說High Tech 了。我們還停在已以Low Cost贏取客戶的思維,但這樣的Model很容易被複製,除非有系統性優勢,很容易被取代。你不知道什麼時候,工作已被印度人,中國人,新加坡人搶去而不自知。重點不在搶,我們得自問,我們的競爭力何在?
